Billy Eugene Self Jr., born on December 27, 1962, is one of the most accomplished basketball coaches in NCAA history. His success at Allen Fieldhouse is particularly notable, where he has amassed a remarkable 292–16 record, boasting a .948 win percentage. Self's ability to recruit top talent, including several McDonald's All-Americans, has been a key factor in his sustained success, with many of his players going on to have successful careers in the NBA.

In 2017, Self was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, a testament to his impact on the sport. By the end of the 2021–22 season, he ranked 18th in all-time wins among Division I coaches and 4th among active head coaches. He is the second-winningest coach in Kansas history, trailing only the legendary Phog Allen. Notably, Self is the only coach in Kansas history to lead the program to multiple NCAA Tournament National Championships. In 2021, Self signed a lifetime contract extension with Kansas, further solidifying his commitment to the program. In 2022, he joined an elite group of coaches by becoming the seventh to win multiple NCAA tournament championships since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985.
