Robert Jerry Lanier Jr., widely known as Bob Lanier, was a towering figure in professional basketball, both literally and figuratively. Standing at 6 feet 11 inches, Lanier was a dominant center who played for the Detroit Pistons and the Milwaukee Bucks during his 14-season career in the NBA. Known for his exceptional footwork, soft shooting touch, and physical presence in the paint, Lanier was a force on both ends of the court. Despite battling chronic knee injuries throughout his career, he managed to make a significant impact, earning eight NBA All-Star selections and being named the MVP of the 1974 All-Star Game.

Lanier's basketball journey began at St. Bonaventure University, where he led the team to the 1970 NCAA Final Four. His college career was so impactful that the university retired his No. 31 jersey in his honor. Lanier was the first overall pick in the 1970 NBA Draft, selected by the Detroit Pistons, where he quickly established himself as one of the league's premier big men. His ability to score, rebound, and defend made him a cornerstone of the Pistons' franchise for nearly a decade before he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in 1980.

In addition to his on-court achievements, Lanier's leadership and sportsmanship were widely recognized. He had his No. 16 jersey retired by both the Pistons and the Bucks, a rare honor that speaks to his lasting legacy with both franchises. After retiring as a player in 1984, Lanier transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant coach and later as an interim head coach for the Golden State Warriors. His post-playing career also included significant contributions to the NBA's community outreach programs, particularly through his role as an NBA Cares Global Ambassador, where he worked to promote the game and its values worldwide.

Lanier's impact on the game of basketball extended far beyond his playing days. His induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992 was a fitting tribute to a career marked by excellence, perseverance, and leadership. His contributions to the sport, both on and off the court, have left an indelible mark on the NBA and the global basketball community.
