In 2022, Johnston was appointed as the executive vice president of football operations for the revived United States Football League (USFL), where he played a pivotal role in overseeing the league's inaugural season. His leadership and experience have been crucial in shaping the direction of the USFL, as he continues to contribute to the growth and development of professional football.
