Before his professional career, Thomas had a standout college career at Indiana University, where he led the Hoosiers to the 1981 NCAA Championship as a sophomore. Thomas's impact on the Pistons was immediate, and he quickly became the face of the franchise. After retiring from playing, Thomas transitioned into various roles within the basketball world, including coaching and executive positions. He served as the head coach of the Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, and Florida International University (FIU). Additionally, he was an executive with the Toronto Raptors and the New York Knicks, and he owned the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) for a period. Thomas also had a stint as the president and part-owner of the New York Liberty, the WNBA team affiliated with the Knicks. His post-playing career has been marked by a continued passion for the game, both as a coach and an executive.
