Richard Gannon, born on December 20, 1965, is a former professional football quarterback who played 18 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). Gannon's career began at the University of Delaware, where he excelled in the Wing-T offense under coach Tubby Raymond. His college performance, which included three consecutive seasons with over 2,000 offensive yards, earned him the Yankee Conference Offensive Player of the Year award in his senior year. Gannon was selected by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 1987 NFL Draft, though he was initially considered for a position change to running back. However, he was soon traded to the Minnesota Vikings, where he began his NFL career as a backup quarterback.

Gannon's time with the Minnesota Vikings saw him rise to prominence, particularly in the 1990 and 1991 seasons when he stepped in for an injured Wade Wilson. By 1992, Gannon had secured the starting quarterback position and led the Vikings to an 11–5 record, marking a significant turnaround for the team after two consecutive losing seasons. His leadership and performance on the field helped the Vikings reach the playoffs that year. After his stint with the Vikings, Gannon played for the Washington Redskins in 1993 and later joined the Kansas City Chiefs from 1995 to 1998, where he continued to develop as a reliable quarterback.

Gannon's most successful years came during his time with the Oakland Raiders from 1999 to 2004. During this period, he was selected to the Pro Bowl for four consecutive seasons (1999–2002) and earned two All-Pro selections (2000, 2002). Gannon's standout season came in 2002 when he was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player (MVP) and led the Raiders to Super Bowl XXXVII. Although the Raiders fell short in the Super Bowl, Gannon's performance solidified his reputation as one of the top quarterbacks of his era. Unfortunately, injuries plagued his final two seasons, and he retired from professional football before the 2005 season.

Following his retirement, Gannon transitioned into a successful career in sports broadcasting. He served as a sports analyst for CBS Sports, providing expert commentary for NFL games from 2005 through the 2020 NFL season. Gannon's deep understanding of the game and his ability to break down complex plays made him a respected voice in the world of sports media. His contributions to both the NFL and sports broadcasting have left a lasting impact on the football community.
