James Timothy McCarver, widely known as Tim McCarver, was a prominent figure in Major League Baseball (MLB) both as a player and a broadcaster. Born on October 16, 1941, McCarver enjoyed a 21-year playing career as a catcher, primarily with the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies. He made his MLB debut in 1959 and quickly established himself as a reliable and skilled catcher. McCarver was a two-time All-Star and played a pivotal role in the Cardinals' 1964 World Series victory, where he batted an impressive .478 and hit a crucial three-run home run in Game 5. His ability to handle pitchers and his leadership on the field made him a key asset to his teams throughout his career.

One of McCarver's most notable achievements came in 1966 when he became the first catcher since the 19th century to lead the National League in triples, with 13. His versatility and athleticism were rare for a catcher, and he was known for his strong defensive skills, leading NL catchers in assists and fielding percentage in 1967. That same year, McCarver finished as the runner-up for the National League MVP Award, just behind his teammate Orlando Cepeda. After being traded to the Phillies in 1969, McCarver continued to excel, forming a strong partnership with pitcher Steve Carlton, with whom he won three division titles from 1976 to 1978.

Following his playing career, McCarver transitioned into broadcasting, where he became one of the most recognizable voices in baseball. He worked as a color commentator for several major networks, including Fox Sports, and set a record by calling 23 World Series and 20 All-Star Games. His insightful analysis and deep understanding of the game earned him three Emmy Awards, and he became a beloved figure in sports media. In 2012, McCarver was honored with the prestigious Ford C. Frick Award, recognizing his contributions to baseball broadcasting. His legacy in the booth was further cemented with his induction into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2016.
