Cushing played college football for the University of Southern California. He was named the 2007 Rose Bowl Defensive MVP. In 2009, he was selected as the 15th overall pick in the NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. In the same year, he was named the NFL Rookie Defensive Player of the Year. The Texans named Cushing the 2011 Team MVP.
