Ainge's professional career began in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he played parts of three seasons as a second baseman. However, his true calling was in basketball, and in 1981, he was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the NBA. Ainge played 14 seasons in the NBA, primarily as a shooting guard, and was known for his tenacity, shooting ability, and leadership on the court. He played for the Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, and Phoenix Suns, earning an All-Star appearance in 1988 and winning two NBA championships with the Celtics as a player.
After retiring as a player, Ainge transitioned into coaching and management. He coached the Phoenix Suns for three seasons before joining the Boston Celtics' front office in 2003. As the Celtics' general manager and later president of basketball operations, Ainge was instrumental in rebuilding the team, making bold trades and clearing cap space to position the franchise for success. His efforts culminated in the Celtics winning the 2008 NBA championship, and Ainge was named NBA Executive of the Year for his role in constructing the title-winning roster.
Ainge's legacy in basketball is marked by his ability to succeed in multiple roles—player, coach, and executive. His contributions to the game have left an indelible mark on the NBA, and his leadership continues as an executive with the Utah Jazz.
