David Américo Ortiz Arias, widely known as "Big Papi," is one of the most iconic figures in Major League Baseball (MLB) history. Born in the Dominican Republic, Ortiz's career spanned 20 seasons, primarily with the Boston Red Sox, where he became a household name. After a modest start with the Minnesota Twins, Ortiz's move to Boston in 2003 marked the beginning of a legendary run. His powerful hitting and leadership were instrumental in ending the Red Sox's 86-year World Series drought in 2004, a feat that cemented his place in baseball lore. Ortiz would go on to win two more championships with the team in 2007 and 2013, the latter of which earned him the World Series MVP award.

Known for his clutch performances, Ortiz was a ten-time All-Star and a seven-time Silver Slugger winner, solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest designated hitters (DH) in the history of the game. His ability to deliver in high-pressure situations made him a fan favorite and a feared opponent.

Throughout his career, Ortiz set numerous records as a DH, including 485 home runs, 1,569 RBIs, and 2,192 hits. He posted ten seasons with at least 30 home runs and 100 RBIs, and batted .300 or better in seven different seasons. Despite a dip in his numbers from 2008 to 2012, Ortiz experienced a resurgence in his final years, leading the AL in doubles, RBIs, and slugging percentage in his final season in 2016. His remarkable consistency and ability to perform at a high level, even in the twilight of his career, further solidified his legacy as one of the game's all-time greats.

Upon his retirement, Ortiz ranked sixth in AL history with 541 home runs, fifth in doubles with 632, and ninth in RBIs with 1,768. His 11 career walk-off home runs during the regular season, along with two more in the 2004 postseason, earned him a reputation as one of the greatest clutch hitters in baseball history. In 2022, Ortiz was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, a fitting tribute to a player who left an indelible mark on the sport. His contributions to the game, both on and off the field, continue to inspire future generations of players.
