Born on December 8, 1958, in Duluth, Georgia, Rogers rose to prominence as a running back at the University of South Carolina, where he became one of the most dominant players in the nation. His college career was highlighted by winning the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 1980, an award given to the best player in college football. Rogers rushed for over 5,000 yards during his time at South Carolina, setting numerous school records and solidifying his place as one of the greatest players in the program's history.

Rogers was selected as the first overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints, a testament to his outstanding college career and potential at the professional level. He made an immediate impact in the NFL, rushing for 1,674 yards in his rookie season, which earned him the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
