Ozzie Newsome Jr. is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of professional football, both as a player and an executive. Born on March 16, 1956, Newsome made his mark as a tight end for the Cleveland Browns, where he played from 1978 to 1990. Known for his exceptional hands, route-running, and football IQ, Newsome redefined the tight end position, becoming one of the most reliable pass-catchers of his era. Over his 13-year playing career, he amassed 662 receptions for 7,980 yards and 47 touchdowns, earning him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999. His contributions to the game as a player were only the beginning of his lasting impact on the NFL.

After retiring from playing, Newsome transitioned into a front-office role, where he would go on to have an equally impressive career as an executive. In 1996, he became the first African American general manager in NFL history when he was appointed to lead the Baltimore Ravens' football operations. Under his leadership, the Ravens became one of the most consistently competitive teams in the league, winning two Super Bowl championships (in 2001 and 2013). Newsome's keen eye for talent and his ability to build a winning culture were instrumental in the Ravens' success, and he is credited with drafting future Hall of Famers like Ray Lewis, Jonathan Ogden, and Ed Reed.

Newsome's legacy as a general manager is defined by his ability to balance short-term success with long-term sustainability. He was known for his disciplined approach to free agency and the draft, often opting to build through the draft rather than overspend on high-priced free agents. This strategy allowed the Ravens to remain competitive year after year, even as the NFL's salary cap era made it difficult for teams to maintain success over long periods. Newsome stepped down as the Ravens' general manager in 2018, but he continues to serve as the team's executive vice president of player personnel, ensuring that his influence on the organization remains strong.

In addition to his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction, Newsome was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994, recognizing his outstanding collegiate career at the University of Alabama. There, he was a two-time All-American and helped lead the Crimson Tide to a national championship in 1978. Newsome's contributions to football, both on and off the field, have made him one of the most respected figures in the sport, and his pioneering role as an African American executive has paved the way for future generations.
