Roland Glen Fingers, born on August 25, 1946, is a former Major League Baseball right-handed relief pitcher who played from 1968 to 1985. Known for his effectiveness on the mound, Fingers was instrumental in redefining the role of relief pitchers, particularly the modern closer. His career spanned three teams: the Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, and Milwaukee Brewers. A seven-time All-Star, Fingers led the major leagues in saves three times and was named Rolaids Relief Man of the Year four times. His signature handlebar mustache made him one of the most recognizable figures in baseball, especially during his time with the Oakland Athletics, where he was a key part of their three consecutive World Series titles from 1972 to 1974.

Fingers' most notable achievement with the Athletics came in the 1974 World Series, where he was named the Most Valuable Player. His performance in that series was nothing short of remarkable, earning a win in the opener and securing saves in the final three games to clinch the championship. After leaving Oakland, Fingers joined the San Diego Padres as a free agent in 1977, where he continued to dominate, leading the major leagues with 35 saves in his first season. He tied the National League single-season record with 37 saves in 1978, further solidifying his reputation as one of the best closers in the game.

In 1981, Fingers was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, where he had one of the most outstanding seasons of his career. He led the Brewers to their first playoff appearance and was awarded both the American League Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Award. His 28 saves in the strike-shortened season, combined with an astonishing 1.04 ERA, made him a pivotal figure in the Brewers' success. Fingers also helped the team reach the World Series in 1982, marking their only appearance in the Fall Classic to date. His ability to deliver in high-pressure situations made him a cornerstone of every team he played for.

Fingers retired in 1985 with 341 career saves, becoming the first pitcher to reach the 300-save milestone. At the time of his retirement, he held the major league record for career saves, a mark that stood until 1992. He also set franchise records for saves with all three of his teams and is remembered for his "long saves" of two or more innings, a feat that remains unmatched with 135 such saves. Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992, Fingers became only the second relief pitcher to receive this honor. Both the Oakland Athletics and Milwaukee Brewers retired his uniform number in recognition of his contributions to the game.
