Following his successful college career, Alford was selected in the second round of the 1987 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. He played professionally in the NBA for four years, splitting time between the Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors. Although his NBA career was relatively short, Alford's impact on the court was undeniable, and his transition to coaching would soon become the defining chapter of his basketball legacy. His time as a player provided him with valuable experience that he would later apply to his coaching career.
Alford's coaching career spans over three decades, during which he has led multiple college basketball programs to success. He began his head coaching career at Manchester University before moving on to Southwest Missouri State University, the University of Iowa, and the University of New Mexico. Alford's most high-profile coaching stint came with the UCLA Bruins, where he spent five and a half seasons before being dismissed during the 2018–19 season. Despite the challenges, Alford's coaching acumen has been widely recognized, and he has consistently demonstrated his ability to develop winning teams.
In 2023, Alford achieved a significant milestone by leading the Nevada Wolf Pack to the NCAA Tournament, making him one of only four coaches to guide five different teams to the NCAA Division I Tournament. His ability to adapt and succeed across various programs speaks to his deep understanding of the game and his leadership qualities. Alford's contributions to college basketball, both as a player and a coach, have left an indelible mark on the sport, and his legacy continues to grow with each passing season.
