Andy Murray

He won both a gold and silver medal at the 2012 Olympics

Sir Andrew Barron Murray, born on May 15, 1987, is a former British professional tennis player who made an indelible mark on the sport. Murray reached the pinnacle of the tennis world by being ranked No. 1 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 41 weeks, finishing as the year-end No. 1 in 2016. Over the course of his career, he won three Grand Slam singles titles, including two Wimbledon championships in 2013 and 2016, and the US Open in 2012. Murray's consistency and determination were evident as he reached eleven major finals and was ranked in the top 10 for nearly a decade, from 2008 to 2017.

Murray's journey to tennis greatness began under the guidance of his mother, Judy, and alongside his brother, Jamie. At the age of 15, he moved to Barcelona to train at the prestigious Sánchez-Casal Academy, where he honed his skills. His professional career took off during a time when Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were dominating the sport, but Murray quickly established himself as a formidable competitor. By 2010, he had joined the ranks of the "Big Four" alongside Federer, Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, a group that dominated men's tennis throughout the 2010s. Despite early struggles in major finals, Murray's breakthrough came in 2012 when he defeated Djokovic to win the US Open, becoming the first British male to win a Grand Slam singles title since Fred Perry in 1936.

Murray's career reached its peak in 2016, a year that saw him win Wimbledon for the second time and defend his Olympic gold medal in men's singles at the Rio Olympics, making him the only player in history to win two Olympic golds in singles. That same year, he ascended to the world No. 1 ranking for the first time and capped off the season by winning the ATP Tour Finals, defeating Djokovic in the final. However, after 2016, Murray's career was hampered by injuries, and he eventually fell out of the top 100 in 2018. Despite these setbacks, he made a gradual return to the top 50 in the 2020s, continuing to compete at a high level before playing his final professional tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Known for his exceptional defensive skills, Murray was an all-court player with a reputation for his ability to return serves and construct points with precision. His two-handed backhand was considered one of the most consistent on the ATP Tour. Beyond his individual achievements, Murray played a pivotal role in re-establishing the United Kingdom as a force in men's tennis, leading the Great Britain Davis Cup team to victory in 2015. Off the court, Murray has been a vocal advocate for gender equality in sports, and in 2014, he made headlines by hiring Amélie Mauresmo as his coach, becoming only the second top-10 player in ATP history to work with a female coach.
