Ronald Scott Stevens, born on April 1, 1964, is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and former player, widely regarded as one of the most dominant defensemen in NHL history. Over his 22-season career, Stevens played for the Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and New Jersey Devils, where he served as captain from 1992 to 2004. Known for his physical style of play, Stevens was a master of body checking and defensive positioning, making him a cornerstone of the Devils' defense-first strategy. His leadership and defensive prowess were instrumental in the Devils' success during his tenure.

Stevens began his NHL career with the Washington Capitals, where he played a key role in helping the team reach the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time. After a brief stint with the St. Louis Blues, Stevens was acquired by the New Jersey Devils through arbitration, a move that would define his career. As captain of the Devils, Stevens led the team to four Stanley Cup Finals appearances, winning three championships in 1995, 2000, and 2003. His performance in the 2000 playoffs earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player, further solidifying his legacy as a clutch performer in high-stakes situations.

Despite his individual and team success, Stevens never won the James Norris Memorial Trophy, awarded to the league's best defenseman. However, his impact on the game was undeniable. He retired with 1,635 games played, the most by any NHL defenseman at the time, a record later surpassed by Chris Chelios and Zdeno Chara. Stevens was also the youngest player in NHL history to reach 1,500 games played, achieving the milestone at 37 years and 346 days. His career came to an unfortunate end after a slapshot to the head caused post-concussion syndrome, forcing him to retire in 2004.

In recognition of his outstanding career, Stevens was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007, his first year of eligibility. He remains one of the most respected figures in the sport, known for his leadership, toughness, and defensive excellence. In 2017, Stevens was named one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players" in history, a fitting tribute to his contributions to the game.
