Most recently, Strong served as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Miami, continuing a long and distinguished career in both college and professional football. His coaching journey has seen him take on various roles, including a stint as the assistant head coach and inside linebackers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL during the 2021 season. In 2014, Strong took on the head coaching role at the University of Texas, one of the most prestigious programs in college football. However, his time in Austin was marked by mixed results, as he struggled to turn the program around. Over three seasons, Strong compiled a 16–21 record, leading to his dismissal in 2016. Despite the setbacks, Strong's tenure at Texas was notable for his efforts to instill discipline and accountability within the program. His leadership style, while not yielding the desired results on the field, earned him respect from players and colleagues alike.

After leaving Texas, Strong was quickly hired as the head coach at the University of South Florida in 2017. In his first season, he led the Bulls to a 10–2 record, but the program's performance declined in subsequent years, resulting in his dismissal in 2019. Throughout his career, Strong has been known for his defensive prowess and his ability to connect with players on a personal level. His extensive experience in both college and professional football has made him a valuable asset to any coaching staff, and he continues to be a respected figure in the sport.
