Martin Schottenheimer was a highly respected figure in American football, both as a player and a coach. He began his career as a linebacker, but it was his coaching career that truly defined his legacy. Schottenheimer served as a head coach in the NFL for 21 seasons, leading teams like the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins, and San Diego Chargers. His coaching style, often referred to as "Martyball," emphasized a strong running game and tough defense, which made his teams consistently competitive. Despite his success in the regular season, Schottenheimer is often remembered for his struggles in the postseason, where he was unable to secure a Super Bowl victory.

Schottenheimer's career was marked by remarkable consistency. He reached the playoffs 13 times in his 21 seasons and had only two losing records, a testament to his ability to build and maintain winning teams. His most successful stint came with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he coached from 1989 to 1998, leading the team to multiple playoff appearances and earning a place in the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame in 2010. His regular season success was undeniable, as he ranks eighth in career wins with 205 and seventh in regular season wins with 200. However, his postseason record, with only five wins in 18 games, remains a blemish on an otherwise stellar career.

One of Schottenheimer's most notable achievements came in 2004 when he was named NFL Coach of the Year for his work with the San Diego Chargers. After inheriting a team that had gone 4-12 the previous season, Schottenheimer led the Chargers to a 12-4 record, showcasing his ability to turn around struggling franchises. Despite this success, his teams often fell short in the playoffs, never advancing beyond the conference championship round. His .613 regular season winning percentage is among the best in NFL history, but his .278 playoff winning percentage is the lowest for any coach with at least 200 wins.

After his NFL career, Schottenheimer briefly returned to coaching in 2011, leading the Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League (UFL) to a championship in his only season with the team. This victory was a fitting end to a long and distinguished coaching career. Despite his many accomplishments, Schottenheimer has not been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, making him the only eligible coach with at least 200 regular season wins to not receive that honor. His legacy, however, remains intact as one of the most successful and influential coaches in NFL history.
